Student is 7 yo and she studies in an International school in Grade 1. Her school covers Mandarin language 30 mins each day and the level is pretty basic. Parent want her to be bi-lingual and have good grasp of Mandarin across reading, writing and oral.

Parent sent her to Berries in 2021 and she struggled to catch up with the others in her class because the other kids were more advanced and native Mandarin speakers. Parent asked Berries if I could move my daughter to another class 1 or 2 years below her age but the school did not allow that to avoid big age gap and potential social interaction issues. Parent stopped her Berries tuition after 1+ year.

Student is now practicing Mandarin through Duolingo outside of school. Parent speak 20% Mandarin, 80% English with her, but her father is 100% English speaker. Student is someone who is inquisitive and finds traditional classroom style boring if the teaching is one-way, so Parent think a private tutor who can adapt teaching method to suit her daughter's needs will work better for her.

As she learns to enjoy the language and gets more comfortable with it, Parent like her to get to the level of speaking Mandarin more regularly with Parent. Parent like her to pick up MOE standards, but it is not an expectation for her to be PLSE ready when she is 12.
